    Early 901?

I was on a website and noticed car 301493 for sale, a very nice restored 65'. Prod records say june of 65' build date. What I didn't understand was the seller referring to the car as a 901 model. To my knowledge there are only 82 901 cars all built in 64'. Was this a left over chassis or special car or is it just a misprint?

Not trying to be a smartass as the car looks nice just trying to understand the sales verbiage.

    thanks!

I suppose calling chassis # 301493 could be explained a way as wishful thinking, puffery, or analogy (as 301493 is very much like a true 901) but it's definitely not a 901. Many features are the same, but a true 901 wouldn't have indents in the valence behind the engine and would probably have a spring to hold the engine lid open instead of a gas strut. A true 901 should also have a different gas lid release.

But, by even the strictest standards 301493 is a true 1965.

301493 is mentioned in the thread 1965 to 1967 Production:

    Chassis# Engine# Transaxle# Paint_code Note
    301493 901612 101364 6401 Jun 1965 - Melbourne Aus - LHD

I believe the cutoff for 901s is around chassis # 300048. It's in this forum somewhere.

There was an EARLY brochure dated Oct 1964 with a rather clumsily retouched "901" on the glove box:

That is so strange. Jim, in the photo that you posted, it looks like the bezel for the ignition is chrome. Just wondering because mine is chrome. I thought they were all brass.

The ignition in the above photo looks like a 356 chrome switch and bezel.

That's the only brochure picture I have showing a chrome bezel. It also seems to show chrome bezels on all the knobs and rubber floormats, none of which we atomically see in a '65 911.

I do have an early (undated, printed in USA) brochure showing a brass bezel (or maybe it's a black plastic bezel--but it isn't chrome):

Brochures commonly re-used pictures from earlier model years, so a 1965 dated brochure would sometimes show 64 cars, a 1966 dated brochure cars built in 1965, an October 1964 dated brochure a car from August 1964 or even earlier ..etc...not a general rule but very common use with literature items, up to 1973.

The 901 brochure printed in late 64 actually shows 901 prototyps from late 1963 and 1964...

Aside from that retouched "901" on the dashboard on the October 1964 brochure I've posted, there's a 356C brochure with photos of a 356B with retouched hubcaps.

Here's a page from a February 1959 (second year of the 356A T2) accessories brochure showing T1 or earlier seat backs:

I guess Porsche--a good Swabian company--didn't like paying for photo shoots.
