How HOT does your Battery Tender get?

I always keep my non-driver cars on a battery tender. I use a few Beltran units. The other day I needed to move the charging unit to a new location while it was in red charge mode. IT WAS HOT! Like really hot. Then it later cooled off when it went to green mode. I switched the units around for a test. The replaced unit also got quite hot. This does not happen on my single battery water cooled cars. So I wonder if the twin batteries might have something to do with it??

On my twin battery cars, I have been told to use one terminal on one and the opposite terminal on the other. I have also wired a permanent charger through the starter solenoid and a regular engine earth on my dual battery British cars as they are very unaccessible. I only use Ctek chargers and none of them have ever been more than just warm.

If your batter tender is getting hot you need to change something in your system immediately. The most likely causes are a) something is hooked up incorrectly; b) something is wrong with your battery or batteries; c) something is wrong with your battery tender (unlikely given that you swapped units and they both behaved the same); or 4) the battery tender(s) you are using are too small for the load (possible if you have two full-size 12V batteries or if there is a fault in the system that is causing a large drain).
