Curious as to how anyone would know that? Obviously the red fades rather quickly. Was it more of an orange red? A bright red seems to make sense. I do concours judging- even for a show car- who is going to challenge the shade of the red? And what proof would they have that it is not correct? Comparison to a sticker that has been in the sun for 40 years?

Here you go, post #3. BTW my original on my '71 Targa is a square decal not die cut around the engine.

Just to add since Porsche is supplying these in more of a red shade now I would not deduct in concours judging, but if it is a bright red then it was a replacement. I notice some insist that these were die cut around the image, maybe for the early '70 cars but my guess it was a new supplier for '71 and cheaper to omit the die cut.

I am going with Mike on the 'square' decal (as mine was) as to being original on both of our cars...not saying that different suppliers may have changed it up a bit over the years, but the 'forensic' evidence of its originality seems compelling to me and now bolstered by Mike's experience.

mac73s this is a picture of a decal on an amazingly original '71 E . It is not a reproduction . I think the cars left the factory with decals like this .

From my 71 Targa, it spent many yrs inside under cover, was off the road 16 yrs when I got it about 8 yrs ago or so. is original rectangle cut minimal fading, although I can not testify to how it looked in 71, if anyone is interested I can get the cut size.

    Regards

    I have a N O S square cut decal. Says, made in Germany & has 911.701.102.00. I think richy's die cut decal is perhaps an earlier N O S factory edition too....cliff

I don't think Jerry L's picture is an original decal . 1st , it doesn't look like a decal , it looks like a sticker . 2nd , I've never seen an original decal mounted so high and 3rd , it is not straight - the valve cover lines are not parallel with the rear window defrost wires .

A lot of times the install of the decal was left to the customer and was inside the maroon cover with the owners manual. So no instructions on installation or placement.
