    What is this?

The tube vents the Air Cleaner housing to the pipe which is capped off by a rubber sleeve, referenced in Pelican as Crankcase Vent Rubber Valve. What is it's function, I don't see any connection to the crankcase? Using the M&K rainshields setup there is no place to connect this.

The rubber hose connects to a small nipple on the center bottom of the original air cleaner housing. The hose then goes to the small tube (nipple) on the top of the metal tubular "thing" which passes through a small hole in the right front engine tin. The "thing" attaches to the right front of the motor via one of the 6mm screws that secure the right front engine tin. If you don't have your stock air cleaner housing in place you can see the hole in the right front engine tin as it arches across the top of the case back here. The slotted boot fits on the bottom of the "thing." The entire function is to allow condensation and oil/vapor to drain out of the air filter housing to the bottom of the car. Sooooo...it's a drain!

Thanks for the explanations. So what is that hole at the bottom of the tube for if it is covered by the boot. Mine is rather loose fitting, is that on purpose or just because it's old. If it serves some kind of overflow then mine was completely masking the hole, which is easy to do as there is no stop. Not a problem I can buy a replacement boot, just wonder how it fits.

    Thanks,

The boot should fit fairly snug and is supposed to have slit in the bottom to allow fluid to drain but keep dirt out. Not sure if it's available...Stoddard?

The hole is how the rubber boot locks on. There's a round "tang" on the boot that hooks into the hole.
It's actually a VW part; used on T1, T2, and T3 since... well... a long time ago.

I found a box of OE ones a while back that I didn't know I had. With the VW number on them. 311 115 541 I believe.
You should have no problem finding them online.

Thanks for the clarification about the hole and part reference. It is $1.95 on Wolfgang Int'l, Dump Tube Boot, a lot less than from Porsche. I thought the split in mine was age related and my tang is barely visible. I guess that's why the PET calls it a valve.
Thanks for all the inputs folks.
