    Best additional aftermarket heat in case of exhaust heat exchanger delete

    Looking for a solid solution to heat up the cabin/windshield.

    We do not have space either for exhaust heat exchangers nor for heat hoses in the sills.

    Webastos will ruin the total weigth.

    Any recomandations for a solid heater that fits in the smuggler box?

    My suggestion is simple, lightweight seat heaters, unless you need more significant heat.

    I had to come up with something sort of the same on my old Volkswagen Bus. Ended up with heated windscreens. Haven't fitted them yet, but in theory this could work.
    Bought mine in the UK from Ricky Evans.

    Not the best picture, but I guess it will give an idea. There are 2 little cables on the upper right & left side of the glass. The screen itself consists of 2 sheets of glass with the heating foil laminated in between. Therefore the screen is just a tad "thicker" than standard.

    300W really won't heat up the cabin to any noticeable degree and at 12V will need 25 Amps of current.

    If you use a heated screen you will need around 30Amps and also an electric fan somewhere in the trunking to blow air across the screen.

    If you don't have air movement they will still tend to fog up in heavy rain especially in humid conditions so fooling the dew point is a good plan.

    A typical car heater will have an output of around 4kW which would need in excess of 300amps to produce electrically so petrol burning heaters seem to be the only practical system to use if you want a warm car.

    Eberspächer make a system which seem to weigh in at around 2.7kg and is petrol burning.

    We have been looking at trying to use a custom made oil cooler mounted in the luggage bay. By piping oil through a simple cooler mounted in a tube and using a fan to blow the air may work but needs some detailed design effort.

    I think the problem might rather be in conjunction with TÜV approval.
    For any car from 1957 IIRC you need "a device" that is supposed to keep the front window defogged to receive tüv approval.
    It might even be a problem to use a modern eberspächer in order to receive a approval as "historic".
    The Idea with the oil cooler in the smugglers box is great imho. And with an added fan and some ducting to switch between heat or non heat it surely makes sense.

    Just an idea that occurred to me: modify a hair blow dryer to point upward through the holes under the dash at each end. Electric, light, cheap, unobtrusive, and probably very easy to do.

    Im going to try an electric "Instaheater" as sold in the 80s for VWs. My old Stewart Warner Southwind beetle gas heaters worked well, much better than Eberspacher bombs.

    --- Never would I consider an alternative heat source with a 'combustion' source so close at hand. Fabricating a heat exchanger for your model, and ducting, must in some way be possible.
