Help: first gear won't stay in ...

Hi everybody ... yesterday I was out driving pretty hard with some friends and while negotiating a hairpin, the first gear went out by itself, with all the mess you can imagine.
Since then, it only stay in when gently applying power with the clutch a little engaged, otherwise it will go out. Trans is a 915/60 with factory short throw kit. All the other gears have no problems.

    What might be the reason?

    Thanks a lot.

You probably have to rebuild... but check your shift coupler first

Drain the oil and make sure you're ready to capture pieces.

    Or buy a bungee cord.

Pops out of gear, worn operating sleeve, synchro and coupling gear, a rebuild will take care of it.

A 915/60 is a 77 transmission, so this is probably about "Fiona"...
Do you have any receipts for transmission work on Fiona? How long have you owned Fiona?

You should do these basic things first, before pulling Fiona's transmission...

    1) Eliminate the possibility that this is a shift linkage issue.
    2) Drain the transmission oil, and check the drain plug magnet for unusual bits. Check the oil for metallic glitter.
    3) Remove the cover plate from the bottom of the transmission. Check the guide fork attached to the cover plate, and confirm that it's not loose.
    4) Report back.

Wow! Gotta love this place. Mayo, Beck, Ledbetter and Bunin all responding in one thread asking for help. As good as it gets.
