    Hood Latch Clasp Pictures Requested

    Hello All,

    As others before me my hood keeps popping open while driving. I have tried the adjustments as recommended with no success.
    I have come to the conclusion that the clasp within the lower release mechanism must be warn beyond specification.

    Could someone with a hood that does not open please post a picture of their latch?
    I am going to disassemble mine and machine a new one to get this functioning properly.

    Bob,

    Here's mine.... From your picture it looks like your spring plate release isn't returning completely...

    I would try spray lubricating the release plate and pushing in with your finger and see if it snaps back to full return (lock) position...

    I would guess that the cable is not adjusted properly.

    Most cables are bent back over the set screw, so straighten the cable results in it braking. But straighten out the cable and loosen the screw. Find a pin that fits tight in the small hole and align catch till it is located, that is the position of adjustment. Pre-tension the cable and latch screw a little to achieve that position with the cable adjustment. Remember if cable breaks, the catch flips in the opposite direction to release the hood pin. Loosen cable and play with latch, you will figure it out. Then adjust hood pin length, and alignment in the center of of the latch hole.

    This comes up so often I did take some pictures years ago which should help illustrate what Mark and Gordon are saying. Loosen cable lock screw, insert 4mm punch in the hole, use vice grips to pull all slack out of cable, use vice grips to pull cable and hold latch back (after removing 4mm punch) now remove spring from upper latch leaving only the post which you will unscrew to have maximum length, now slowly lower hood and move upper latch around until pin is centered in the lower latch. By holding the cable back with the vice grips the hood won't latch on you. When the pin is centered (you won't feel any resistance as the pin goes in and out of lower latch) remove vice grip holding latch open, reinstall spring assembly, leave pin long and keep shortening until hood latches lightly against the bump stops (which you should have previously adjusted when the latch was held open). I actually showed all of this live at a tech session at the Salt Lake Parade.

    Thanks Gentlemen,

    Your pictures have confirmed my suspicions that my catch lever is significantly warn. I will weld some material in place and file it down to the shape I see in the images you have provided.

    I have used the adjustment procedure that has been described with no luck so I knew something else was causing the issue. The picture I sent was likely with the cable disconnected.

    Ill post pics of this remedy when I am done. These latches are pricey so if they can be fixed with a weld bead it may save a few folks some money. Money that can spent on something more exciting.
