Hey guys, my 72 restoration is at the point where I need to paint the dash and engine bay black, does anyone know which products that will reproduce the correct finish in these areas? Thanks.

If you're an at home mechanic, for the dash I chose SEM trim black 39143. It is a nice color match, and it is one of the better rattle can products leaving the can. Everything else these days seems to come out like crap, although Wurth products are good. Keep in mind if you are sending the car out for paint, you may want to have your painter spray this at the time. I did mine ahead of time as I did not want to spray black paint anywhere near my freshly painted car. I blue taped it off, but it took 14 months in the painting facility and the blue tape took quite a beating, it worked out in the end, but it was nerve racking peeling off the tape. As far as the engine bay, if you are trying to match the dull black of the Karman bodied cars, I used a can of Rust-oleum oil based Satin black. The model number is 7777. I find this matched exactly the brushed on black colors on the early 911 chassis, door edges, engine bay etc... It's nice because it comes in small 1/2 pint cans and is very easy to apply with a brush. Of course if your not an at home mechanic, the pro's have dozens of products they can recommend to use. Best of luck on your resto...Cheers Steve

I've used both the Wurth and PPG trim paint on the dash and it's OK. But it's not a perfect match and the durability coming out of a spray can is crap. You'll be forever watching your fingernails when nyou take out your gauges. Fortunately, we found something better/
When we were in Cali visiting the guys at CPR a couple years back I noticed that their dash faces were spot on. Much better than the trim black I was using. They were kind enough us fill us in. They use a PPG product. Some kind of black enamel primer if i remember correctly. My painter is on vacation this week but he has the code and I can post when he gets back. We've used this product several times since then and we're very pleased with it.
Thanks for the replys. That would be great if you could share the PPG code.
Good question, Boosted, thanks. I have a dash respray coming up, and have had good success with PPG products in the past, so would be also keen to hear the answer on this.

Could I ask what black is used on steering wheels. Would that be the same black as the dash?
Actually, the steering wheel spokes are one of the places I really like the Wurth trim black. You need to spray a final heavy coat to minimize some of the texture.
The paint code I referenced above for the dash is PPG DP90 Black Epoxy Primer.
They have been using DP90 in the American musclecar resto world for 10-15 years at least, great frame/firewall paint. Very good stuff and durable
