Thread: Steering UJs

    Steering UJs

I am sure this subject has been discussed in the past but I can't seem to find the thread with regard to the various different styles of UJ.

    Can anyone date the changes.

The earliest UJs use what I believe in an Imperial sized UJ located by the traditional Nadella Washer, the main body is clearly forged.

This then changed to a Metric UJ which is staked in place using a 'staking punch' again in a forged housing.

The final generation uses a similar sized metric joint but in press formed housing, the bearing cups differ slightly but the joint is still staked into place.

I have sourced all of the joints - both Imperial and Metric - but I may have to re-manufacture the washer for the very early joint and if they are very rare it may not be worthwhile.

    Any ideas?

Chris the early ones use a pin and a 10K property class screw
the cutover to the second style is noted in the PET, I think with the 305000 cars (67-)

Chris, a change occurred with the 67 model cars when the steering shafts became splined, as opposed to knurled.
Is one of the joints in your photo not splined internally?

All the joints in the photographs I posted have internal splines so I will have to check some of the earlier joints we have.

My initial concern was more to do with the diameter of the UJ Spider and the use of the retaining washers.

Chris, that's the only specific change that I was aware of on early cars.
Other differences might be due to changes in suppliers.

Your lower joint has a ZF trademark on the yoke. Do the others have any logos or trademarks anywhere?
