Splitting tranny (902 5 speed) and engine (2.0S)

    Hello guys!

Been looking at several post and videos but only found info on the 70-72 gearbox removal ( rotating the TO).

my gearbox is the 69. To my understanding it should pop out of the engine real easy. But for some reason it just doesn't!! I moves like a milimetre from the starter side but the other side doesn't even move. It simply won't move!

    any ideias??

the bearing is ok and looks good. The fork moves freely but I can' access the nut to remove it. And the manual states that it should be removed or applied with the gearbox removed from the engine... so I am at a lost here!

    help? Please?

You are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Just undo the 4 bolts and pull the trans away from the motor. All that crap about 70/71 and 72 and later 915 transes has nothing to do with you. You just need to keep the trans aligned with the motor until the main shaft of the trans is free of the clutch on the motor.

    Ciao

    Hey Jim!

    Thanks for the reply.

that's exactly the thing... it should pop right out! But it won't budge! That's way I started looking for on the interwebs... and found the info on the 70-72 gearboxes. But I am right in thinking that my 69 should be just pullling or do I need to do anything else? This is not my first gearbox... actually I did a lot of them! ( but not porsche) and never ever had something like this. It just doesn't feel right.

Are you sure that the trans is a 69?

    Well, actually no... It's a 66!

Manufacture date is 1/66. Has a 902/1 stamp in the bottom, and also 901.301.101.0R on the side.

    any ideias?

Press the clutch - or better: have someone press the clutch, perhaps this helps

I've seen corrosion build up in the trans bellhousing holes against the mounting studs, takes some effort.

Gled49 Will try and give it some!

But everybody agrees that I just need to remove the bell housing bolts and pull the trans apart, right? no need to remove the fork or trust bearing...

Yes, no need to remove anything other than the 4 bolts.

    Guys, thx for the support.

So, obviously, something was wrong... what happened is that the last grease monkey that fiddle with the car had for some reason made a new type of stud. and had it installed through the gearbox effectively screwing them together! What a ...

Check the size of that stud!

now i only have to machine the gearbox hole, or use a time-sert on the engine case... think I would go with the gearbox hole.
