Thread: COA question

    COA question

HI, Have a question. 1971 911T, I have the COA for the car which details much of the information as needed, engine # is correct but for transmission it notes "information not available". Strange also that the transmission which appears to be period correct 901 does not have any numbers stamped on the lower rib or found on the case besides the casting numbers. I wonder if the transmission was exchanged at or near delivery. Any thoughts would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Chris

It seems like most 1970 and 1971 COA's come back with "no information available" on transmission number. Mine was the same for my numbers matching 1970 911T. However a number of years ago I emailed Marc Noack in Porsche archives and by giving him my transmission and engine number he was able to verify that both engine and transmission numbers were in fact original. He was also able to verify several other 1970 and 1971 transmission numbers. This proved that Porsche does have other information which Marc had access to besides the Kartex files on these cars. However it also proves that Porsche only looks at the Kartex which does not list transmission number on most 1970/71 cars and they do not look further for such information when a COA request is made.

I would say your transmission has been replaced after its original build if it does not have any stamped numbers in it. Are there any designation numbers on it elsewhere?

It could be that the case was replaced during a rebuild at some point.

    Chris,

The COA for my car also says the same for my transmission. I assume since the engine is #'s matching that the trans should be as well (based off of the information given to me from the p.o. and verified by forum member Rusty). I wouldn't lose any sleep over this. Hope this helps.

I found that Porsche's COA department is responsive to emailed inquiries. My COA was incomplete, plus I wanted the actual option codes for my car, not the COA description of them (which is sometimes bizarre or wrong). Within a couple of days they emailed me the codes. This was last week.

Great, thanks guys. I believe the transmission has not been changed for a long time but I do not have history from the original owner. I was thinking that the case may have been replaced and not given a number (I believe they did this with some 356 engines), just thought it was strange not to have any numbers stamped on the case. The engine is original, which is good and at this point I am not going to worry much but I will reach out to the COA folks and hopefully get some better information.
