    Long wheel studs

I'm trying to achieve a sport look using open end wheel nuts. How long do the studs need to be to have them stick out about a inch beyond the wheel nut.

I don't know, cap nuts protected any exposed threads from dirt that could damage threads when nuts were removed. Here is a 911R we recently finished. Nuts are flush with studs. Gordon

Common mechanical theory says threads should extend at least equal to stud diameter. OEM stud length in early 911s is 66mm I believe. Diameter is 15mm.

I've usually heard it as 2-3 threads past the end of the nut, or blind thread depth of 2*diameter for aluminum threads and 1-1.5 for steel. The first 3 to 4 threads are the ones that do all the work. The Porsche lugnuts are much deeper than a normal nut for a bolt that size would be. So there is plenty of engagement and the stress tapers off so you effectively have the same situation as a normal nut with 2-3 threads showing.

These are SWB examples, but the same studs were used for LWB.

    Front:
    PET '65-'69 911, Fig. 4-02-00, #09 904.341.671.00 Wheel bolt, front, -'68, standard knurling 14.8mm (45mm long) Qty: 10
    PET '65-'69 911, Fig. 4-02-05, #27 904.341.671.00 Wheel bolt, front, '69, standard knurling 14.8mm (45mm long) Qty: 10

    Rear:
    PET '65-'69 911, Fig. 5-01-00, #15 904.341.671.00 Wheel bolt, rear, -'68 (45mm long) Qty: 10
    PET '65-'69 911, Fig. 5-01-05, #15) 901.331.671.00 Wheel bolt, rear, for hub 901.331.065.07 (52mm long) Qty: 10
    PET '65-'69 911, Fig. 5-01-05, #11 904.341.671.00 Wheel bolt, rear, '69 (45mm long) Qty: 10

As Glen visually demonstrated above, even when the stud lengths are different front-to-rear, open lug nuts will normally be flush with the stock studs.

Depending upon the look that you are after, and the spacers that you will possibly use, you could choose between the next 3 available stud lengths:
    50mm - 928.341.671.02
    52mm - PCG.331.671.00
    66mm - 911.331.671.00

Thanks JimmieT - I stand corrected, the OEMS were 5x mm and I replaced with 66mm.

For clarification 911R used a 20mm rear wheel spacer I believe, none in front. Gordon
