    917/RSR Calipers

Can someone help me out and explain the different brake calipers used on the 917/RSR.

There seems to be 3 distinct variations.

It seems as if the original 917 used a variation of the Girling 18/4 and 16/4 caliper used on the GT40 and Lola T70 and these had no cooling fins and maybe didn't find there way onto the RSR.

There seems to be an ATE caliper with 'horizontal' fins and these commonly seem to be referred to as 'Endurance' Calipers

The last iteration is the RSR caliper with Vertical fins.

I am sure someone knows the details if which types were fitted to which cars and the relevant piston sizes and pad compatibility.

I am trying to work up a complete picture of these brakes and I would be grateful for any clarification.

    Thanks

I've got a set of nos 16/4 sitting in my office. In John horsemans book, racing in the rain, he stated that the jwa/gulf factory 917 used Girlings. And when presented by the factory with the new/improved brakes they refused them believing th Girlings to be tested/satisfactory. Of course they cringed when the brakes then went to the rump factory team (martini) who then potentially had the advantage over the official factory team!

    RSR calipers

I have sets of both type RSR calipers. The pistons for the front caliper for both types is 42mm . The rear pistons for both types is 38mm. Front and rear pads for both are the same dimension except the one with the fins on the side plates that run the length of the side plate are thicker. I can get you pictures as soon as my foot heals and I can get down in the basement.
