This is a two owner, well maintained and carefully driven, driver condition, 1972 911 T Targa with a matching number engine 6123648, and original paint - signal yellow color. The car was purchased by the second and current owner in 1975. The 911 presently shows 127,xxx miles driven, however the owner stated that the odometer stopped working in 2000 and he estimates that the car has been driven less than 10,000 miles in the past 17 years. Original factory options include Recaro sports seats and S trim. The information presented herein can be substantiated by a file of over 50 repair orders and related historical documents including the original registration and sales slip dated August 21, 1972. The engine number and Recaro seats were validated by telephone conversations with PCNA. If the condition of this car is undisturbed, other than to polish the exterior and perform usual maintenance, cleaning and detailing, it is believed that this can be a serious contender in the Preservation class at concours events. The car was purchased at Manhattan Porsche Audi, Bethesda, Maryland but was immediately driven to Colorado where it has remained. There isn’t any evidence that the car was involved in any collisions or accidents.
Mechanical
The engine has been continuously maintained by professional Porsche repair facilities and a recent leak down test showed 10, 15, 35, 15, 20, and 20% loss, these are good numbers considering the car has only been driven a limited number of miles in the past years. New pistons and cylinders were installed in July 1981 at 92,302 miles. The engine is very original with no apparent modifications and is equipped with the original MFI injection system. The engine performs very well and there are no engine oil leaks. The five speed transmission shifts properly. The brakes were rebuilt with new front rotors, front and rear pads, all calipers rebuilt and new shocks installed in 2015. The valves should be adjusted in the near future.
Exterior
The paint is generally in good to very good condition, given its age, with only minor dings, dents and imperfections. The paint thickness was measured and showed 3.5 to 5.5 mils over the entire painted exterior. However, there are three rust areas in the driver’s side threshold plate at the rear, the area at the bottom rear of the left fender and the same area in the right fender; please refer to the photo album for more details. The front bumper has several rust pits across the entire front but no obvious rust holes. There is no rust in the floor pan and more importantly, there is no rust in the gas tank support pan. The panel fit and gaps are very good. The wheels are factory Fuchs, 6 X 15 dated 1972 and new tires were installed in 2015 and are in excellent condition. The Targa top was rebuild by Dave Brown, Targa top expert in Boulder, Colorado, in 2000 and the seals and top are in excellent condition. The exterior has not been buffed or polished recently thus displaying its’ original patina.
Fuel System
There is no evidence that the gas tank was ever removed or cleaned.
Interior
The seats are factory original Recaro but the leather has suffered through the years and are badly aged and cracked with small sections missing. The dash has also suffered and has cracks and the driver side door pocket needs some work. The original carpet is badly worn, especially on the driver’s side kick panel. The rear seating area and door panels are original and in very good condition. The original radio was replaced with a more modern ‘entertainment center’ many years ago. The original radio is no longer available.
Undercarriage
The undercarriage, suspension, floor pan and wheel wells are very original but need to be cleaned.
Electrical
All electrical systems function properly with no apparent modifications. Only one battery is presently installed.
Summary
The original and complete tool kit, jack and Owner’s Manual and paint touch up stick are included. This is an excellent value, tailor made for the enthusiast who wants a driver-level example in original condition, or as an excellent restoration candidate, which is very favorably priced.
The car is located in Denver, Colorado and is available for inspection.
