    Door Vibration Damping?

I am doing the assembly of the internal door hardware on my '70E project and am wondering about the "damping mat" I see glued to the inside of many early and later doors. My restored doors do not have any of this material on the inside.

What is it? Do I need it? If so what should I use and where do I get it?

    Thanks in advance.

Tom - it keeps the door skin from vibrating as varying harmonics can be created as the car is being driven...helps too with the nice closing sound of the door. If you are not stuck on finding the original PORSCHE material (if it is even still available), you can use any of the modern 'peel and stick' sound deadening material, i.e. DYNAMAT which comes in sheets or rolls.

I used Dynamat on my 993, which also has this same tar-like vibration deadener. Looks like the exact same stuff Porsche used on the early cars. On the 993's after many years it curls and falls off into the bottom of the door. If you don't care about originality Dynamat does the job.

My local NAPA has something close to Dynamat that I plan to try. Thanks for the input.

I've used these and really like the results. The whole door inside surface area does not need to be covered, just the center section as per the picture above.

Additionally to ensure good adhesion, wiping down the inside with something like alcohol before really helps. Surprisingly a lot of dirt and grime over the years.
