Needing Wisdom Again: Instructions on Re-Assembling the Fuel Door Latch?

Resident Scholars,

I seek the wisdom of the community to re-assemble the latch for the fuel door. The fenders were NOS replacement fenders, and I am not certain where/when the latch mechanism was removed, but in truth it doesn't matter. The task is now to get it re-assembled and operative. The photos show the portion of the latch that was left on the car, as well as an entire/assembled latch and the mechanical tongue that needs to be re-assembled. (As you can see, my efforts thus far have made it necessary to touch up the paint, when I finally get everything into place.)

Does anyone have instructions (or a trick) to get the compressed spring into place and make it operative?

That unit is best assembled out of the car, then the whole assembly is bolted back in the fuel well before paint. It is not worth the frustration to try and do working in the well, especially after paint.

this could be VERY helpful. please tell me how the photo is oriented?

which direction is the front of the car?

where is the hole for the bolt to mount the latch?

It is facing rear of car, between filler well and fender joining plate, you will need a very short 5mm Allen. Since this was all just assembled the bolt shouldn't be rusty.
