    Help on refinishing SWB tank

What's the best way to paint or otherwise finish the gas tank for a 67?
I did a search and the best I came up with was this:

All gas tanks were shot with Wurth SKS grey, a PVC based material not paint at all. This is the same undercoat used on most of the undersides of Porsches for most of the years. There was a different undercoat used in the Porsche factory built bodies on short wheel base cars. For a low cost resto you could paint the old coating on your tank with grey spraypaint. Correct would be to strip the tank down to bare metal and buy Wurth SKS in Grey, NOTE: that there is a stone guard product for rockers and bottom of front bumpers but this material is different than SKS. SKS comes in a tall bottle and you need a "Shultz" gun to apply it properly (a $18 gun that needs compressed air). SKS does change to a very dark grey sometimes black over many many years in certain conditions.

I've read that the the Wurth grey that's available now isn't right. I don't know if that's true. The car is going to be a very nice driver, not a concours car so a good finish that is close to the original would be fine.
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Alan

The good news: you may not need Würth SKS for the gas tank in a '67.

If PET is correct, up to 1968 [the code's -68], gas tanks were smooth finished and had the Sombrero [E.901.556.101.20 desk pad for emergency wheel] which is mysterious bituminous black goo.

Somone sesms to have reproduced it, see 1965 Gas tank colors and textures?.

I should admit I'm not sure when the last Sombreros came out of Stuttgart. Many of the discussions imply it was 1966 but PET says later.

The numerous original '67's I have seen have stone guard on the gas tank . I think SKS grey and black mixed 1 to 1 is a pretty good match . The grey alone is too light and has some blue in it . Grey and black with a little green toner is a really good match for a '67 .

    PET is not very reliable.

And in this case very wrong.

Whom are you gonna believe? PET or your own lyin' eyes?

In this case, I'll go with your lyin' eyes. I tend to believe PET when it gives an actual chassis number but "-68" isn't much to go on.

I trust my lyin' eyes... it's my lyin' mind that's suspect.

PET is trustworthy only when it's my old Shih Tzu.

My NOS tank. Kind of tan-grey like the Hella headlight bucket color.

The '73 tanks are a tan-grey , not '67 tanks . '67's are darker grey , no tan . Do not use the above tank as an example for your '67 .
