    80P26E Pistons replacement

    Hi Guys,

I've seen some of these pistons selling for a lot of money, even when used. Can please someone explain me why?? I get that they look like the ones from the 906 and that they have 9.9:1 compression. but if they are used and worn whats the point??

I have these exact same pistons and they are on the limit of usability, but i prefer to go and bore the cylinders than to have partially worn parts on my engine.

Apart from this curiosity of mine, i have been trying to find oversized pistons to replace these ones and rebore my barrels to ,50mm. Do any of you guys know where can i get a set of pistons for this 69S engine? or do i have to make a set by order?

No one is restoring a 69S engine? i don't believe that in 2017 no one has a set for this engine!

Why do people buy old pistons?

Because they don't know any better and these people are cheap.

So, no one has a clue where to find these pistons?

Should I call JE or Wossner and ask for a One off???

This company in Germany will make you any piston you want in Mahle Material.

    Don't Wossner do an 81mm piston. ?

Nice, will talk to them. Thx!

wossner does ( 80,5 and 81 ) but only for 66 to 68, 69 are higher compression slightly different shape... look like a 906 piston.

Sure Mahle is still doing anything you want

JE and Woessner pistons at 81mm diameter are 'jam jar' style pistons with a side relief on the skirt and quite different in design to a 1969S piston which is similar to the 906 design. The 69S piston is a 'slipper' design.

The JE piston is manufactured form 2618 Alloy which expands more than the original material which was Mahle 124 and very similar to 4032 alloy. This means that a JE tends to suffer from slight piston slap when cold if used in a Biral Cylinder.

    The Woessner Piston uses 4032-T6.

Wahl used to make pistons for Weissach and for the race team but they are relatively expensive and when I asked for a price a few years ago they were just too costly.

We had a batch of 81mm Omega Pistons made a few years ago. They were a slipper design and based on a 906 piston.

These were made in 4032-T6 and were 81mm diameter and were excellent.

I would like to make more but lead times are a little too long and the minimum Order Quantity has increased.

We now supply an alternative - still made in 4032-T6 and using an NPR Ring Pack. They have coated skirts and have been effective.

We currently have no stock and will be re-ordering shortly.

    Hi Olivier,

Those Mahle are complete sets with Cylinders and Pistons i just want the pistons. and the 906 and 69S pistons vary a bit. They look the same but they are not the same.

    Hi Chris,

this is exactly what i wanted!! Shame the first ones aren't available anymore. The last ones on your pictures are the ones that wossner specifies for the 160HP version? (66 to 68) Ref: K9412 ??

The second photograph are not Woessner pistons. We had them made in Italy and they are not too bad.

K9412DA, which is a 'Stock' Piston looks more like a basic JE piston and has a flat side relief and the pin bosses on the inside of the skirt.

It is possible that Woessner have made 1969 style pistons for a Custom Order but they normally only supply a custom design to the company placing the order.

Woessner prices for single sets of Custom Pistons are relatively expensive and we have never looked at this route.

If we order from Omega there are two issues.

For small quantities the cost is likely to be around $1500 per set made in 4023-T6 complete with pins and ring pack and we would need to buy 5 engine sets.

The lead time would also be quite long as Omega only produce 4032-T6 pistons every 4 months due to heat treatment scheduling.

We are discussing making pistons with another manufacturer - also in 4032-T6 and also planning to make a 906 cylinder with a Nikasil Coating.

We will make the cylinder from a cast block that has been Hot Isostatically Pressed to remove porosity.

We already have 3.0 SC style cylinders being machined.

Chris thank you so much for this info.

So what you are telling me is that no one has this, and the companies that can eventually supply these pistons have to had them made by order.

Well, I am in Europe ( Portugal ) and I have to tell you that doesn't make much sense to be buying something from the US that has been made here. i would end up paying 2x or 3x the price with all the shipping and taxes...

Nevertheless, thank you so much for your help!
