    new ignition/door keys

    Hi,
I while ago I received the original ignition/door key blanks from Tony Euganeo and had them cut by a local locksmith using my old example.
Unfortunately, I can't turn the key in the ignition lock even though it was made as a exact copy. I believe that the new key has the correct pattern/cuts
as the locksmith was using his copy machine one more time on it-he mentioned that no more material was cut the second time and when looking at both
the old and new keys they look identical. Has anyone some ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Regards.

Does the key work in the passenger side door lock? The passenger side tends to wear less as it gets used less. I would take the door lock cylinder out and put the new key in it. If you have a wafer that is sticking up, push down on it. If you can't push it down it means the key needs to be cut more. If you can push down and it's springs back up then it's cut too much. Other than that you could try some powdered graphite in the ignition lock and see if something is sticking. In other words I would try everything I could before trying to open up the ignition. That's a real pain.
Something is obviously different. If the original key is worn at all, cutting a new key from a worn key with even the slightest variation could give you trouble.

If you take the lock cylinder out, just take a file and smooth out any pieces that are sticking out. Everything should be flush when the key is fully inserted. Then, your new key will work just fine.

His problem is in his ignition though. Using the passenger door lock is just an easier way to possibly find the problem.

Thanks to the early S registry and the lead to TWEETS, I just received a new complete set of (2) red and (2) black keys for my 72 911 and will be having them do their same magic for my 70 911. Superb work and superb customer service...could not be happier with the experience!

    Hello Stefan,
I don't know if you have been able to resolve your key/lock issue. There are different reasons your key may not operate your ignition. The ignition has a very tight tolerance. Even a small deviation in the depth of a cut is enough to cause a jam in the lock cylinder. The only keys we duplicate are ones that we can verify are good candidates for duplication. Most auto keys should not be duplicated but instead cut to code. Even after we cut keys for customers, we go back and do a mock up of the lock and test each and every key we make, multiple times to ensure proper operation before shipping back. We perform quality control tests. Most of the time a copy of the key will not work because copies are even more problematic than the key that is being copied. Copying a key that is a duplicate, duplicates of duplicates, worn keys, damaged keys (bowed, bent, twisted), and irregular will only lead to problems. In the rare event that a key is a good candidate for duplication, then the problem will reside in the lock itself. If your key is properly cut, then you have a problem in your ignition which needs to be addressed. And by the way, it is also common for key duplicates to look correct, but are not. A locksmith will not usually admit he didn't cut your key correctly. We can inspect your ignition and all your keys and identify and correct the issue.
