    Replacement CDI Coil

What's the best option to replace my Bosch CDI coil (0 221 121 001)? Most reviews on the current replacement from Bosch say they are unreliable. In terms of performance and reliability, should I try to find a used Bosch black coil or buy a 3rd party coil (e.g. Partsklassik, Pertronix, etc...)?

Used original black coil is better than the modern silver coils.

The issue with those other coils is they don't have the same specifications as the CDI coil. The CDI coil is not really designed to store energy and release it on field breakdown-- it's more of a transformer to step up the energy flowing from the capacitor in the CDI. Hence, the primary and secondary resistance, impedance and turns ratio are very different.

And if you can't find a good used one we have been using the Parts Klassic copy. No trouble so far.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be on the lookout to buy an original Bosch black coil and order a PartsKlassik to hold me over in the meantime. Is there anyway to know if a used coil is still good before buying it or do I just have to take my chances?

Thanks Chris. As it turns out, a couple of Early S members reached out with NOS black coils for sale so I was able to buy one. Gotta love this registry and its members!

I saved this a while back. You need to test the terminal resistances with a meter...

PartsKlassic work well. Make sure everything is "tuned" regarding resistance.

BION, an MSD will do in a pinch as will a Pertronix Flame Thrower.

    Wich Pertronix do you suggest?
It seems there are three models on the catalog... Flame Thrower 1 2 or 3?
