Great story congrats on dedicated efforts and family history
Thanks, and you’re spot on about the many ‘68-only pieces... I resisted the urge to scrape off the side reflectors, but in the end I decided to put ‘em back on to keep it just as it was delivered to the US. Truth be told, I did remove that awful smog pump, but I did keep it in case I ever want to reinstall it. Other than that, it’s as true as I could make it to the original!

Your car looks cool. I am a fellow Glencoe resident who is new to Porsches and this forum (and enjoying both immensely). I will send a PM with a more personal introduction. In the meantime, hopefully we'll cross paths on the road soon. Please be on the lookout for a metallic green 1971 Targa (that's Central School in the background)! Howard

Hey Howard, great to hear from you as it’s a while since we saw each other! Congrats on your ‘71 and you’ll make great use of the targa top this summer. I just saw your PM so I’ll shoot you a reply to catch up. Enjoy that awesome Targa and looking forward to hearing about your search and how you ended up with that beauty!

Yup, totally agree. Now that I put the new XAS’s on Chester (the tires were on back order but came in on Monday), we’re gonna lower it this week. Not sure what you guys think, but this is the height I’m gonna shoot for:

The funny thing is that Chester has always sat high. Here is a pic that my uncle took back in 1973 (the year after he bought it) and you can see it sat high back then as well.

Chester is now BACK ON THE ROAD!

It is with great pleasure that I can finally share with everyone that the final restoration work on my 1968 911L is COMPLETE! I picked up Chester on Thursday with one of my twin sons who was up visiting us this week and we did the official handover with Tom Snellback at The Last Detail who handed me the keys to close out this multi-stage restoration . I have to say that these guys do THE BEST WORK, and I am more than thrilled with how this has turned out. I want to make a special call out to Bob Kukla who literally did all of the work on Chester, and who was an absolutely fantastic partner in getting this done the right way.

It has been a long road, but given how it turned out this was DEFINITELY worth the wait! Here are a few pics of the handover with Tom and Bob, my son doing a little time behind the wheel, and some outdoor shots that hopefully reflect how well this has turned out. Thanks again for everyone’s help, input, suggestions and encouragement throughout this whole process, and I am just wrapping up an article on Chester and my restoration journey that should be in the Winter edition of the Esses magazine later this year to round out this whole project.

What's up with the coil ? Why is it not on the engine compartment relay board ?

    Very nice work indeed !

quick one : I do have a L too, and notice your pic with the 2 plaques, one paint code and one emission compliancy. Are you sure about the existence of those 2 on a L and the position ?
I ask because I do have the paint code on mine that is at the same position as your emission regulation and no holes for a second plaque.

    Cheers

Hey Richy - Great point on the location of the coil. That was the location of the coil when I bought the car from my uncle in 1992, so when I restored it we put everything back where it was when we kicked off the restoration work. I have also mostly seen the coils located on the relay board but I never really thought about changing it since that’s the way it’s always been on Chester. The bracket that it’s mounted on was cleaned along with everything else so while it looks brand new, it has been on the car since sometime before 1992. I can’t dig up any engine bay pics from my uncle from when he bought it in 1972 as the second owner, so I can’t go back that far so see where it was when he bought it.

I’d like to tap into the collective wisdom here of the experts here to answer the question: On a US-delivered 1968 911L, should the coil be on the relay board or mounted someplace else?

Thanks for help on this since I didn’t do all of this restoration work just to replicate any earlier errors

Hey Xavier - Great question. I know that my uncle never resprayed that part of the car so those plaques have been there since at least 1972, so I am almost certain that these 2 plaques are correct for a US-delivered 911 in 1968.

In looking into this more, I think this is a difference between US-delivered 1968’s and ROW cars. Remember that the 911S was not allowed into the US in 1968 due to emissions rules, so there was no ‘68 S in the US. Instead, Porsche took the the 911S and dropped a standard engine into it to make the 1-year only 911L in the US with the full S-spec minus the engine, complete with a smog pump (which I and pretty much everyone else have removed). I have a suspicion that the emissions compliance plaque was required for US 911’s in 1968 but not likely for ROW cars. In doing a quick online search on a bunch of different 1968’s, I see that the US cars have the 2 plaques while the European cars have just the paint code and chassis number plaque.

Here are a few of the pics I found to support my theory, but I’d love to have the experts here weight in to clarify
