Help - Passenger Side Foot Board Fitment

I went to install the passenger side foot board in my 70E coupe restoration project today and ran into a problem. The fit on the LHS on the foot board between the carpet and the tunnel is extremely tight. There does not seem to be enough room between the the edge of the foot board and the tunnel carpet to allow the board to seat properly. The carpet is the Auto's Intl kit and the floor board is original. I tried to muscle it into place but short of possibly pounding it into place with a rubber mallet, it does not seem to fit. My other option would be to trim the foot board.

Has anyone else faced this problem and if so, how did you handle it?

Here is a photo with the carpet peeled back and the board fit properly. Seem awfully tight between the lower LHS of the board and the tunnel. I am thinking i need to trim the board on the belt sander.

    What say the experts?

Not an expert,,,,, but that's why God made belt sanders! See, they really were hand built cars!!!

That's weird. With the carpet on the tunnel removed, does the M6 stud center in the recess at the bottom of the board? If not, that would support Ed's idea that Hans welded the receiver in the wrong place.

Either way, I don't think the belt sander marks will show!

How far a drive is it to Lake of the Ozarks? For me it's about 19 hours. . . Ed could probably make it there on half a tank of gas,,,,,,

I installed an original one last week and did need to take the sander to several areas for correct fit.
Also needed to widen out the 2 slots at top that slide into the metal receiver .
Don’t use to much presssure or mallet , you will break the top tabs .

Thanks guys for all your input. A little trimming with the belt sander on the lower LHS and it fit into place nicely. No pounding needed.

I'm pretty sure the new carpet has slightly thicker backing.

I think you are correct, especially the vinyl padding on the top of the tunnel forward of the shifter.

Did they weld M6 studs on the passenger side in all early 911's. My '69T had no stud to secure the bottom of the foot board. It's just wedged in place.

I think there may be a small bracket welded to the floor to provide an angle to the stud, so it matches the floorboard angle. Can't come straight up. Has the floor been replaced?
