MFI vs. Weber fuel filter question

My recent 72-T hot rod candidate purchase is running Webers but still retained the original MFI fuel filter console to filter the fuel. I don't see where original early 911s running Webers or Zenith carbs utilized a separate fuel filter..assume the only fuel filtering was done at the fuel tank sock and screens at the fuel inlets ports of the carbs. I just replaced the fuel tank, hoses and the MFI fuel console filter and thought I'd use that arrangement temporarily to run the car and sort it a bit before undergoing its disassembly. Since there is no 'return' fuel line from the Weber setup, I would 'loop' together the in/out return ports on the MFI fuel filter console. Would appreciate hearing if this temporary arrangement would be OK, and the reasoning of why no separate fuel filter for carb cars when they were new....or I just can't seem to find them in my parts books. Thank you!

I think most people running carbs today use in-line filters in the engine compartment fuel lines leading to the carb inlets. My experience is that the carbs are very sensitive to any fuel contamination and the filters are essential for good performance.

Tom - thank you for your thoughts. I understand the importance of good fuel filters, but is there something that the small in-line filters do better than the MFI canister filter does not? As I mentioned, this is a temporary arrangement for me...but having said that...if the MFI console filter provides equal or better filtration than the small inline units, I'm inclined to use it.

I have converted all my cars (MFI, EFI and carbs) to utilize an inline 6 micron fuel filter made by Fuel Lab. I am sick of particles getting in my carbs and these high quality filters put a stop to that.

The MfI filter will be plenty adequate . Porsche was one of the first to have fuel injection on production cars in the US . Dirty gas was a problem , therefore the big filter . The MFI fuel pump supplies around 12 lbs. psi , so I think the pressure will have to be regulated for carburetors .

Thank you, and yes, the car runs with the 'other' fuel pump for carb'd 911s and 914/6.
