    Not sure 'bout other shops but I threw away my labor guides years ago when the cars were so old that ideal circumstances under which those guides were written no longer existed and it became obvious that very few shops had mechanics who were even properly qualified to work on air cooled.

    I think it's a very rare instance in this industry when the pros who know these cars "overcharge". Convenience and expertise costs what it costs.

    My dealer is a Porsche Classic dealer, so presumably they still work from time manuals. Have yet to have them do anything on my car, as that would mean I actually have it back from Robert Gross!!

    To Frank's point, add 20% more time per decade of car age to accommodate rust, corrosion, brittleness of hoses etc. !!! That's my rule of thumb from doing my own work at any rate.
