Thread: '69t front pull cooler fitting leak

  1. #11
Those cooler kits had the bracket which mounted to the back of the headlight bucket via a couple of drilled holes. I bought one of the kits from Stoddard back in the day for my then new '78 SC. Elephant still sells a kit, and they might have the bracket...or fabricate. It's two small angle brackets, one to the cooler, one to the bucket, joined by a 6mm bolt to allow pivot adjustment. Never used any kind of sealant.

Just weld a tab with a hole in it on the back of the headlight bucket to pick up the upper tab on the cooler. I would use a rubber bushing and a shouldered bolt with a nyloc nut so that there is a little movement

Thanks for all the info guys. Finally finished the project. Found the appropriate upper mounting bracket, which allowed use of the stock rubber bushing. The cooler is much more secure now (it really wobbled previously, and likely caused the premature fitting leak).

One remaining issue, the oil lines are very close together, and in one area (see photo) I fear that the sharper edge of the nut on the fitting will rub against the copper line. Any recommendation for a temp resistant pad or wrap to protect that section?

That padded ear clamp that you have on one of the lines is supposed to be securing both in an original installation.....keeps things pretty snug so there would be minimal chaffing.....rubber padding wraps as they use along the rocker clamps would help.

Or use a smaller adel clamp and pull bottom line closer to mounting screw.

Thanks. The existing hole did not allow me to secure both lines with that clamp as the new fittings and top mount caused the lines to rise an inch or two. I could reposition and drill a new hole, but I'd prefer to not have to do that. I thought a reasonable solution would be to secure the second line to the lower one perhaps with safety wire, and pad the rough area of the fitting with a temp resistant pad of some sort. Are those copper lines malleable enough for me to just manhandle them down an inch or two and get both lines in that clamp?

Yes, you can effect a slight bend in them, won't take much, pull it down, put a temporary wedge in between the two, tighten the clamp.
