    John,
Just happen to have my '69S starter sitting on my work bench at home. Will post reply later today.

    John,
OK, I have three starters, and they are almost identical. The one out of my 911, which I think is the OE part, is Bosch P/N 0 001 212 005 EB 12V 0.8PS
Then I have two late model (somewhere in the 70's) VW BUS motors that are almost identical to the 911 part. They both have the same Bosch P/N as the 911, except there is an extra "005" and "006" after the P/N. 0 001 212 005 005. Both of them have the same rating as the 911 (EB 12V 0.8PS). The VW part number is 003 911 023A on both. The one with the 006 on the end is identical to the 911 part where the drive gear exits the end of the motor, and the 005 part is slightly different in the housing around the gear. Visually the gear protrudes from the flange the same distance as the 911 on both VW parts. Seems that the electric motor part is the same on all three, and the dash number is for a slight difference by the drive gear. All three have identical solenoids: 0331 302032
I will post some pics tomorrow.

    John,
Here are some pics. First pic VW"005 006" on the left, "005 005" in the middle and 911 "0 001 212 005" on the right. Second pic shows that the VW one in the middle has an extra lip near the drive gear. Third pic is the VW on the left in the first pic, but is identical to the 911 (used this pic because the 911 was oily). Pretty sure that you could use any one of these motors in the 911, but I would check for clearance with the middle one with the extra lip near the drive gear. Guess I forgot to count the teeth and measure the diameter of the gears to make sure they were the same. I will do that tonight. Pretty sure it should be 9 teeth.

Just go down to your local parts store and buy a rebuilt starter. It is a very common starter and is used on many different cars. 911, 914, 912 and lots of VWs all use the same starter. Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill.

    Ciao

    Jim
