    correct original finish for engine sheetmetal

    Hi i am rebuilding a 1971 911 s targa,i am going to powdercoating the engine sheetmetal,alternator housing strap and rear engine support,can someone help me with the correct factory finish?After 47 years mine never painted seemed to be gloss painted...Thank you,Paolo

    For powdercoating 60% gloss seems to be about right. Some here will say that powdercoating isn't original, but it does stand up well. I've heard from a former Porsche employee that the original engine tin was dip painted, so doing it by spray painting isn't 'original' either...

    They have. At age 48 he finished second on a Duc in the opening round of the Australian Superbike race held this past weekend at Phillip Island, a support race to World Superbike. To answer your question, you obvoulsly don't want high gloss. Mixed feelings about using power coating, but the vendor I use has a "classic black" option that I think is around 60-70% gloss.
