It still has the original style chain tensioners--that's interesting.

It probably came in a car built in June or possibly early July 1965.

Makes it a model year 1965 engine? Not a 1966?

The '65 vs. '66 distinction may not be as big a deal for engines as for cars but yes.

From the lists in this forum, the cars with the closest engine numbers were:
    • Chassis 301708 Engine 901804 Build date 1-Jul-65
    • Chassis 301780 Engine 901799 Build date 8-Jul-65

    FLYWHEEL

But, engine # 901787 came after the change from the "6 volt" flywheel (gear tooth modulus of 2.5) to the "12 volt" flywheel (gear tooth modulus of 2.11). The last "6 volt" engine was 901638. Most--but not all--1965 Model Year 911s came with the "6 volt" flywheel.

Of course, finding a 12 volt SR17X starter with the "12 volt" gear is easy while 12 volt SR17X starters with the "6 volt" gears are rare to unknown.

    CARBURETOR JETS

Engine # 901787 should also have the most common middle set of carburetor jets:

    CENTER LUBRICATED CAMSHAFTS

The last engine with the center lubricated camshafts was 303069.
