    'R' = 'Ridiculous' . . .

Been pining for another 'special' car --- + prolly my 'last' . . . for a while now

Back when I first went looking for an Early 911, Porsche's 996 GT3 was already my 'plan B.' Love-love-LOVE that car. Still remember Georg Kacher's article --- Automobile magazine, was it? . . . broad-sliding a red one, yapping-on about how fast/fun/special/etc the car was. Just from reading about some of the details --- Carrera 4 chassis, special structural mods hand-welded in, titanium rods, blah-blah-blah . . . this sounded like another one o' Porsche's occasional 'wild children' that end-up becoming signature cars . . . something that only Porsche seems to pull-off, any more . . . at least in my tax-bracket (barely)

This car SOooo gives me a tent-pole --- still

IMO? --- the last Real Porsche

Driven several since, always on the look-out for one, done a coupla long-distance PPIs . . . but, after the better part of a year . . . haven't found The One. Hhh

So. A few weeks back, as I was broke down at the local Auto Mall, I took me a walk by all the various dealerships there . . . while I was waiting for a flat-bed

Came by the local Ford store --- marveling at all the incredibly huge/ugly/stupid trucks garrisoned at the front . . . contemplating the end of civilization as we know it . . .

. . . when I saw a Mustang on display, outside, in front of the main showroom

White + blue stripes = Shelby

    Hm

BIG Shelby fan, at one point in my life. Always wanted an early '66 --- rear quarter windows, weld-in over-riders + FG hood w/scoop, etc . . . but never found The right One 'o those, either

Anyway, no Sales people around --- waaay too early . . . so I strolled on over, took a look

    $65k --- + $25k 'market adjustment'

    F*ck me!

Shook my head + moved on

    But the whole episode 's been stuck in my head ever since --- $90k for a huge/ugly/stupid Mustang . . . so? . . .

    . . . did a little searching . . .

    526HP

And there's an 'R' model. Available with NO AC, NO radio/blue-tooth/what-the-f*cktronics, NO back-up camera, NO full-size spare, NO back seat. Alu front fenders + hood. Even has carbon fibre wheels, for shyte's-sake!

    Uh-oh . . .

    Extra goodies 'll prolly help any re-sale --- loser . . .

    Prance vs Pounce

There are any number of perfectly competent, reliable, economical, semi-affordable cars available now-a-days that offer some pretty impressive performance --- all from manufacturers whose 'core' business IS NOT high-performance . . .

    . . . Volkswagens, Mitsubishis, Subarus, Hondas . . .

. . . but I don't really care how fast any of these are --- or how well they drive

That's not why I'd buy 'em. Sure-sure --- 'high-performance' is nice to have, buuuuuuuuut . . . these cars all have a back seat, cargo space, room for Ungrateful Offspring, Bluetooth connectivity . . . and my 'nads are shrinking just writing this

    And? --- to put it Another Way . . . I have some very-specific expectations of a VW sedan --- and they very-most-definitely don't involve spending $40k . . .
    http://www.vw.com/models/golf-r/

    (5 years + 50% depreciated from now? . . . = Different Deal)

IMO --- the GT350R is something different entirely

Car 's stupid. Heavy. Ugly. And sounds-to-be pretty-much useless to drive-around in --- except on a track . . . I mean no back seat, fercryinoutloud

    Also really-REALLY powerful. I mean --- Porsche's current GT3 has 500HP . . . and this dump-truck has 526 (!) . . . for less money. (!!) Way. And built for fun --- not utility . . . or practicality, comfort, social-awareness, kids . . . passengers . . . 'specially those that tend to complain about being cold or me driving too fast

Don't know what the insurance + maintenance is on either . . . but I'm betting that the total costs on the Ford (fuel, maintenance, insurance --- + let's not forget the nasty ol' depreciation) aren't anywhere near the Porsche's . . .

. . . + so I'd get to actually drive the stupid Mustang

(Does anyone actually put any miles on a GT3? Or do people just prance-around in 'em?)

As for any Type Rs, Golf Rs, Focus RSs? . . .

    . . . see ya in a few years . . . . . . . . in AutoTrader

    I know-I know --- Moose-stang . . . + I've had some homely-a$$ cars, too

    Darker colors hide it some

'Course --- if you drive it fast enough, then nobody has to look at it . . . for long, at least

    I like the blue

Who said anything about buying new? I've owned some 25 cars in my life and only a handful were new.
