    1969 911S clutch trouble

The clutch on my ‘69 S was recently replaced with correct NOS parts and was functioning normally. I then parked the car for two months while I was traveling.

When I returned I went to drive it but found it impossible to put the transmission in gear without horrible grinding. I checked the free travel at the top of the clutch pedal and it was about 2”, so I adjusted the clutch cable under the car to eliminate the slack (about 8 turns on the adjusting nut). There is virtually no free play at the top of the clutch pedal now.

I then tried to shift into reverse and first again but the crunching remains.

I think the clutch discs may be sticking together. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed?

    Many thanks, as always,

If the disc is sticking to the flywheel or pressure plate, this may solve your problem. Put the car in first gear with the handbrake engaged (or your foot on the brake), depress the clutch and engage the starter and see what happens. If the starter does not spin the engine, then you will probably end up pulling the engine to see what the problem is.

I don't quite do it that way,,,,get the car aimed for a clear distance, put in 1 st gear, hold clutch down, start engine, car will now lurch forward, keep engine running, keep clutch in, and apply brakes, eventually the rust bond between clutch and flywheel will break loose.

That's how Mike Callas taught me as well. Odd, but of all my cars this has only happened to my 69S and it's happened to that car twice. Wonder if it has something to do with the one-year-only clutch in 69S cars.

    Good news, gents!

Using the techniques described above by SimiBob, Ed Mayo and LiveFromNY, I started the car in gear with the clutch depressed. When the car lurched forward I hit the brakes and heard a ‘pop’ as the clutch discs separated. The car now drives normally. I can’t thank you guys enough!

Reviving this old thread because it just happened to me on my, you guessed it, 69S! Same as Iopena, recently replaced correct NOS parts with about 1000 miles of trouble free driving. Like LivefromNY, I too wonder if it’s not the ultra thin disc and the aluminum pressure plate. By the way mine had only sat for a week or so. Took about a quarter mile of driving with the clutch in while stabbing the brakes to free up. Least expensive repair ever on a Porsche
