    Restoring 1967 911 - Engine Compartment Color/texture

Getting ready to paint engine compartment after sand blasting. I don't know if it was painted with undercoating or plain black. If plain black, what finish should it be?

    Any thoughts.

    Thanks,

On my '67S, first of all, I'm very confident the engine compartment was as original. I did not take photos of that area as I stripped the car, but I do recall the finish details:

The corner brackets where the engine cross bar rubber mounts are bolted were first painted with a 7/10 slightly off gloss black. The flat mounting surface on that corner bracket where the rubber mounts bolt up was then masked (obviously after the paint dried. )

Textured, old school rough, under coating was then sprayed on the sides the compartment as well as the rear latch panel wall, and those masked brackets. There was virtually no primer, paint, or undercoating on the front and ceiling of the compartment where the sound pad would be glued...I was stunned to find rust patina'd bare metal there!

After the undercoating was applied Heinz removed the masking tape from the engine mount brackets giving a clear flat black painted surface for the rubber mounts to bolt up and a fairly distinct raised border of under coating around the perimeter of the bracket.

Eric can chime in here when ever he wants.

Perhaps not pertinent for a '67, but here are some pictures of a '68 Karmann build, Don't remember any noticeable primer, but obviously the engine compartment was painted body color, then partially overlayed with a black textured coating. This coating was not applied evenly and little effort was made to reach all corners of the engine compartment.

I'm not Eric, but my experience with my 67S was exactly as Mark Smedley described above.

Thanks all for your comments, I think they will help me figure out what to do next. I do have pictures of before, but wasn't sure if someone had changed the color plus there was a lot of oil blacking the area.
I have front and rear suspension rebuilt, engine is done, starting on body now.
I have a lot of photos of before (so I can reassemble), during and after. I've tried to keep up with postings on my website, www.projectporsche911.com

    Again, thanks

My 67 911S engine bay looks the exact same as the pics - body color peeking through texture.
