Thread: Fuel Tank Finish

    Fuel Tank Finish

    Hi all,

So I hate to ask this question but I haven’t seen a recent post about how people are restoring their fuel tanks. I’m replacing my tank in my 1970 E. The one I’m removing, I don’t think is original because it hasn’t been coated. The top is black and the bottom is silver. I’ve read that the tank should have been coated with a stone guard coating. Many have said that Wurth SKS Grey was close but Wurth is no longer making grey, only black. So here is my question, if I use the black SKS, what color grey should I paint the tank? I don’t have anything to match so if someone could give me a color reference, that would be great. My second question is that I did find a 3M product 08889 Rocker Panel Spray Coating Grey. Has anyone tried this product. It’s in a rattle can so you might have to build up the coating but I read where someone used it on an older car (car was not identified) and it was close. Just wondering.

    Thanks

    Chris

Surflex has a paint that is an exact match, at least they used to.

Check out my thread on my ‘70E project. The most recent postings show my fuel tank which I believe to have the correct finish.

I think tank color lightened up to more of a grey in 72/73.

Frank is right once again. I have original 69, 70, 72 and 73.5 tanks. The 69 and 70 tanks are a dark grey and the 72 and 73.5 tanks are a lighter gray. Seems like I'm always following up Frank's posts saying the same thing he does.

    Rick,

That tank was resprayed at one time. Not a horrible job but they missed on the color. A shame they didn’t use the proper hose and clamps for the vapor line as well.
Correct color should have a green hue to it.

Again, the 700 mile S is the Gold Standard for this series of tank.

Lucky you can't strike a match posting as a payin forum member that allows freedom of speech and correctness to others.
