    72 911 windshield replacement question..

Despite the safe removal of all the glass in my 72, the windshield cracked sitting safely in its upright cradle...same as I've always used with great success. Local dealer mentioned that the only available glass has been changed a bit to fit the early and later (SC, and perhaps beyond) cars, and it comes with the rear view mirror metal pad in place.....uggghhh, as I am going with an earlier mirror that mounts on the header panel and not on the glass. Has anyone had experience with this newer glass from Porsche, and whether or not this 'pad' can be safely removed....just not sure how it is affixed to the glass...but likely and hopefully an adhesive that can be softened and removed. I'd like to do a local purchase - hence my dealer - as I'm guessing if this item was purchased online (for example, through STODDARD and shipped to me) that such presents too much of a risk for breakage. Thank you for any thoughts...

Pilkington has a broad selection of different types of 911 windshields, with and without mirror fixing. I just had one shipped to San Antonio with no problem. If I remember correctly with shipping and packaging it was under $500.

Although I am in the UK I just purchased a Pilkington front screen. No mirror fixing. Available with tint as well. Heated screens also available and screen was etched with a "Sigla" logo.

Thank you both for the replies - I'll look into the Pilkington brand.
