Help from experts on rear bumper guards!

Hi, my '72 targa came with these rear bumper guards, which I'm wondering whether to replace or restore.

I'm curious as to why they have the holes for the rear valence chrome bars, which I though were optional only for the early '67 year or so. However, a friend's '71 coupé also has the same bumper guards with the holes plugged off!

So now I'm wondering: when did Porsche switch to the non-holy bumper guards?

Porsche only made the non-hole type, those holes were made afterwards by some previous owner.

Thank you for setting me straight: I thought the Amco ones were non-factory with vertical bars holding the round horizontal "nudge" bars, and that Porsche ones screwed directly into the bumper overriders. I'll see about welding them up before rechroming since it seems the newer ones do not fit great (or am I wrong again?).

Don't want to contradict an oracle but I believe in '70-'71 Porsche made an Amco like rear bumper set with the cross bars. However, they did not have the usual exterior joining piece between the cross bars. I have two. Much cleaner look. I believe they were drilled as above, although mine are buried at present amongst my stash so I can't look. Can be seen in the online '71 catalog that used to be available on some web site. I think a search here will reveal some info on these. Hope Florio has the cross bars.

Pretty arcane knowledge. Only way I knew was I found one at Ski Roundtop Swap years ago. Got two 912s and I admired the smooth look so that sent me on a journey to research and find another. Apparently also available on front but have never seen one except in this thread. http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ight=nudge+bar. Wonder what the attractive lady in the Amco ad looks like today.
