Accelerator rod and bushings - necessary to grease??

I've taken these rods out before and replaced the white soft rubber/plastic bushings and always found the accelerator rod and those bushings to have had grease applied - seemingly when the cars were built. In reassembling my 72, this seems unnecessary - the accelerator rod moves smoothly through the bushings which are oversized to the rod. The grease seems to just be a dirt collector and would actually inhibit the smoothest 'slide' of the rod between the bushings. Would appreciate thoughts before I finish this little task. Thank you.

I think you're right on both counts, they are greased initially, but I also agree the grease collects dirt. That being said I confess to always applying a little grease, I guess I can't help myself

Nothing special really,,,,although I tend to lean more to a 'white' grease.

Ed - thank you for your reply...was hoping you'd be the one to answer. So, I think I'll follow your lead and split the difference with a bit of white grease in the bushings...that stuff is certainly slipperier than what is applied at the factory . Thanks!
