    700 mile transmission numbers

    Hello,
What are the hand written numbers on this tranny?
Are they the last 3 digits of the part number for each gear?

From the 700 mile 1970 S. Had one oil change at 600 miles. (Seen in one photo)
(If you haven’t seen them, there are about 100 photos of a car with only 700 miles)
The writing seems to be underneath the waxy cosmoline. Which was sprayed on at factory or port.

Scott, I suspect the numbers refer to differential adjustment shims, where a previous pair being 3.10mm over 2.50mm (if I'm reading the lower ones correctly) were changed to 3.30mm over 2.60mm.
The numbers are written on the transmission side where the differential would be removed, and correspond to common adjustment shim sizes.
They don't look like they were written by someone at the factory, and it's not something you normally see on a transmission case. Maybe the differential was changed at some point.

Jon offered the best opinion about numbers. Cosmoline would be last thing done befor shipping. If a problem arose during the test drive, a repair could of been done first. If those are diff shim thickness, either preload and backlash were too tight or loose. Does the car have a LSD, maybe they forgot it and had to install it and reset diff setup. G
