Gas Tank Change Over in '71?

I Bought was described as a '71 gas tank but it is a little different from the original tank in my 11/70 Targa, was there a change over in '71 model year? My original has the wider vapor port on top and the spare tire bump is angled at the front. Here are pictures of the 2 tanks, my original tank looks like the one on top.

I have original gas tanks from 1969 and 1970 and I believe that breather tube enlarged in the1970 model year as the 69 has the small vent tube. I don't know the dates exactly but it was somewhere around there. I think they still have their original sending units so I might be able to narrow it down.

I believe the larger vent tube started in 70 with the charcoal cannister system.

I had an original ‘69 911T that had the newer version fuel tank with the charcoal canister. Build date was June 3, 1969.
I did a refinishing thread here in the technical forum with a lot of pics, but can’t seem to locate it.

    Bill,

    Found this one:

Without getting into "color is in the eye of the beholder" (uhhh... no it's not.), it's important to remember that grey was never used on textured tanks until '73.

Nailing the color and texture is an art and crucial if you want an original looking finish. Otherwise, it's just a pretty tank that looks nothing like it did back in the day. This "debate" is akin to the cooling fan discussion.

    True color

As far as true tank color goes, here's the April 1970 build of the 1971 700 mile 911S - note the deep factory color. Not really a light shade of grey to my eye but a more deep color, taupe-brownish?
