    '66 Engine Compartment Decals

A friend of mine is finishing the refurbishment of a ‘66 911. His car is dated March 1, 1966 and came with Solex carbs. He’s wondering what decals were in the engine compartment originally. He believes there was a timing decal on the air cleaner snout but he’s not sure if there were others.

If you can help please provide a list of decals and where they can be obtained.

    Thanks,
    John

I think one of the above stickers is incorrect for a March '66 . The stickers are all on the jamb with no stickers on the air filter housing snout . The firing order and valve adjustment are separate on the jamb .

According to The 911 & 912 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity [page 17] the gold foil decals/stickers on the slam panel appeared in 1967.

Before 1967 there would have been the Bendix sticker on the fuel pump and--certainly with Solex carburetors--the firing order/valve clearance decal/sticker on the snorkel.

Here's a picture of a really early car (slam panel without indentations and no Buick throttle dashpot) from a March 1965 brochure:

I personally think the Car Bone snorkel sticker is a little better than Aase's:

The Car Bone snorkel sticker is too thin but it has a better valve diagram, better parentheses, and the finish may be closer to the original. On the other hand, it has incorrect spacing in "=0,1mm"

The two valves in the Aase diagram don't match. The Aase sticker has a period "." for the decimal point in "=0.1 mm" but the Germans used a comma.

I have the original stickers that were on my Weber carb'd '66... they were damaged at some point so I got some from Aase, Canford, CarBone and I have to say that none are perfect... I am going to try to nurse the originals back into condition... If of interest, I can post photos here...
