    '66 Engine Compartment Decals

A friend of mine is finishing the refurbishment of a ‘66 911. His car is dated March 1, 1966 and came with Solex carbs. He’s wondering what decals were in the engine compartment originally. He believes there was a timing decal on the air cleaner snout but he’s not sure if there were others.

If you can help please provide a list of decals and where they can be obtained.

    Thanks,
    John

I think one of the above stickers is incorrect for a March '66 . The stickers are all on the jamb with no stickers on the air filter housing snout . The firing order and valve adjustment are separate on the jamb .

According to The 911 & 912 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity [page 17] the gold foil decals/stickers on the slam panel appeared in 1967.

Before 1967 there would have been the Bendix sticker on the fuel pump and--certainly with Solex carburetors--the firing order/valve clearance decal/sticker on the snorkel.

Here's a picture of a really early car (slam panel without indentations and no Buick throttle dashpot) from a March 1965 brochure:

I personally think the Car Bone snorkel sticker is a little better than Aase's:

The Car Bone snorkel sticker is too thin but it has a better valve diagram, better parentheses, and the finish may be closer to the original. On the other hand, it has incorrect spacing in "=0,1mm"

The two valves in the Aase diagram don't match. The Aase sticker has a period "." for the decimal point in "=0.1 mm" but the Germans used a comma.

I have the original stickers that were on my Weber carb'd '66... they were damaged at some point so I got some from Aase, Canford, CarBone and I have to say that none are perfect... I am going to try to nurse the originals back into condition... If of interest, I can post photos here...

I know one of our list members is trying to produce very authentic declas. The art work with correct fons etc. Is done. Issue is the material.

I got mine from Ake back in '07. The backing is thicker than the original foil stickers but at the time he was the only vendor that I could find who came even close.

Again, as per The 911 & 912 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity [page 17] the gold foil decals/stickers on the slam panel appeared in 1967.

The obvious question is do you have Solex or Weber carburetors?

If Solexes, you probably need the Bendix Fuel Pump sticker (available from many, many sources--they aren't peculiar to Porsches) and the Snorkel [Firing Order & Valve Clearance] sticker from Car Bone or Aase.

If Webers, it's probably the same two stickers. But...

The 911 & 912 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity doesn't give a chassis number for the first slam panel stickers so I certainly have no information on the exact start. Aase sells Early 911 Red Bordered Engine Bay Decal Set - 1966.

Maybe Stephen Acworth will chime in with exactly which stickers came in his Weber-carbureted '66.

There's also the question of where the Firing Order & Valve Clearance goes. With Solex carbs there are fuel lines running over the fan shroud strap so the sticker went on the snorkel. With Webers, that strap is unobstructed. Porsche eventually put stickers there.
