MY RIDE A Porsche 911 Fan Finds His Car for Life A 1972 model Lewis Eig calls ‘Blucille’—in an homage to B.B. King’s guitar—is the one he’ll stick with Lewis Eig, 49, the Haworth, N.J.-based director of business development for Visionary Solutions, a maker of audio-visual products, on his 1972 Porsche 911T, as told to A.J. Baime.

    March 26, 2019 1019 a.m. ET By A.J. Baime

With autonomous cars coming, the days of driving a car that has a steering wheel and a gas pedal are numbered. Cars piloted by people will soon be less desirable—perhaps even outlawed. It makes me feel like a hunter and gatherer, in terms of cars. I want to find the best roads, the best car, to bring the motoring experience to its pinnacle.

In 2000, I got hooked on air-cooled Porsche 911s, which have no modern cooling system and were built up through model year 1998. I have bought and sold them as our family finances have dictated. But about five years ago, my wife said, “Lew, we’ve worked hard. You should find the aircooled 911 that you want to keep for the rest of your life.”

The 1972 Porsche 911 you see here was owned by a man about to turn 90 in Chicago. He had only driven it 300 miles in the past 15 years, and he put an ad online to sell it. Back in the 1970s, a mechanic at a Chicago dealership had hot-rodded it with an engine and parts off a higher performance 1978 911 SC. So it was a highly unique vehicle.

I bought the car in 2015 for about what it would cost to buy a new Ford Explorer. Since this was a 1972 car with a 1978 engine in it, I decided to buy a 1972 engine to make the driving experience more authentic, and, over the course of two weekends, a friend and I swapped out the motor. Just after I bought the car, I heard on the radio that blues guitarist B.B. King had died, so I named the car after his famous guitar Lucille. I call it Blucille.

I do all the work on my own cars, but this one I keep at a shop in Anaheim, California. Every three months or so, I’m in southern California on
business. Three friends of mine who are also Porsche enthusiasts get together and we go on rallies. I have driven this car up and down the California coast, and down the Baja Peninsula into Mexico. This past week, I put 4,000 miles on the car, motoring to Texas and back.
My mechanic says, “Lewis, you’re the craziest person I know. You fly into California, jump in your car, go blasting down the road hundreds of miles, then you drop the car off and have me change the oil.”

Exactly! Of the many Porsche 911s I have driven, this is the one I will drive for the rest of my life.

    Thanks for posting this, Macaroni!

if you don't subscribe to WSJ, you won't get to read the whole thing.....so I've got some help below....

it's really a shame the wheel shop that straightened the minilites recently decided to 'do me a favor' and refinished the fuchs, too....they couldn't replicate (nor could they understand why I would like the) RSR finish, so they did a straight, bright anodize....ugh.

The web link has far more photos, by a talented socal guy, ted7... www.ted7.com (available for private shoots, Porsche enthusiast)....and he posted all his photos of blucille here.... https://ted7.smugmug.com/Cars/Profes...11/i-jXzP85H/A

showing tons of patina, and a few areas needing attention, but the photo shoot was immediately after a brutal west coast rally, so this is the best I could do on short notice. Right after the shoot, we headed to Kerrville Texas for the Hill Country Rally, it was a great time
