Thread: no oil in filter

    no oil in filter

I changed the oil on a 67 the other day and discovered that the oil filter was dry. The path the oil travels from the sump to the tank is not complicated so I am at a loss. The tank may be a replacement as the internal return pipe aligns with the filter console at the 6 o'clock position not the 12. I can only imagine the pipe must be disconnected ( broken, cracked?) from the fitting on the side of the tank. Has anyone experienced this? Oil circulation is otherwise working.

No , but I think the broken line inside the tank is the only logical explanation . Does your car have an oil level sending unit ? I have a good tank without one .

Are you sure you have the right console for that tank, there were two different hole patterns

I believe I do. The hole in the console aligns with the pipe both at the 6 o'clock position.

Car runs but no oil is passing through the filter? Very strange indeed. I would think internal pipe is bad. Consoles bypass valve isn't stuck open is it? I would still expect some oil in the filter though.
Here is a thread of mine on oil tanks. Post 4 shows internals of later tank, but shows the general construction and flow of oil internally.

64-68 tanks had a curved side, while 69-71 had straight side. Consoles appear to be same 64-71, just inverted when installed due to change in tanks. 73 had different thread for later filter as shown in post 13.
If curved side 64-68 tank, post 6 shows console mounted. The hole should be as shown in first picture post 7, 12 o'clock. If straight side 69-71, hole should be 6 o'clock as shown in second picture.

Are you saying the rest of the engine is getting oil,,,,just not the filter?

So, the oil pressure gauge shows to be seeing oil pressure when engine is running, if you run engine and then remove valve cover there is fresh oil present on the cam and rockers, the engine has run for some time without seizing up, if you remove a cam oil line from the cam housing and run the engine oil flow will be present, but if you remove the oil filter and invert it no oil comes out? Very strange,,,,never seen anything like it!
