Thread: Filler in SWB rockers

    Filler in SWB rockers

I am getting ready to apply the filler to the rocker panels on my SWB coupe.

As has been discussed on this site previously, the rockers were filled, probably to gibe a flat surface to glue the rubber mat to. I just wanted to double check if the whole rocker was filled or just the pockets? This old picture from Moito appears to show the whole rocker filled which would make sense is this would be easier to apply then just the indentations. Any other members have pictures of what they have found on their cars?

    TIA

My ‘65 originally had a silvery colored filler applied after the paint only in the depressions on the threshold. It doesn’t have to be perfect as the rubber covers small imperfections. Not sure what they did on later cars.

Mine had some pretty bad surface rust under the rubber which I wanted to get rid of so I repainted the threshold and re-did the filler. Sorry I don’t have the before photo but this is what mine looked like and I am positive it was original.

Interesting trivia. The first photo makes more sense on a production line. One quick swipe and then more time for beer!

The impressions are not of a uniform depth. They are deeper towards the interior and shallow towards the opening. I don’t think a single swipe of filler across over 2 feet would yield good results. This was done after painting and I think a small swipe from inside to out on each is quick and less clean up. I’m not sure what the filler was but it was not the color of normal body filler, probably some form of epoxy that would stand up to moisture.
