....one of the things I really enjoy about these builds is the learning curve and knowledge gained in the process.....whilst I may be useless with my hands I do like a bit of research ....

....in the early days of this build I was chatting with a fellow German enthusiast who pointed me in the direction of a CDI box for sale on German Ebay.....I didn't appreciate the significance at the time but if my far more knowledgable friend said it was worth having I figured I'd better try to buy it.....the item had been painted black which no doubt deterred many, I put in a cheeky bid and subsequently won the item for the princely sum of €21...

....it may not have looked too pretty to start but with a quick wipe of thinners all was well...

....it was only recently when searching for a second 8-pin CDI that I realised how rare these items are and with asking prices nudging €1,000, the extent of my previous good fortune!...cheers Uli

Whilst the 3.0RS featured a regular CDI box the twin-plug RSR engine came equipped with dual 8-pin Bosch units from the race department....

.....the 8-pin boxes differed in that they worked with a breakerless distributor, the trigger being a magnetic reluctor wheel however the main advantage was the regulated power supply which provided constant primary voltage and a more consistent spark which didn't tail off with RPM rise and voltage drop as with 3 and 6-pin boxes. A superior unit for racing.

The race department took stanard boxes and modified them with the part number machined off and replaced with a racing part number starting with a B....

....most, although not all, RSR's seen today are fitted with units equipped with an adjustable rev limiter...

....my boxes are likely to have the internals removed as we'll use modern electronics however I will replicate the race number and fabricate the rev limiter and stickers to add a bit of period detail....

....I also did pretty well when sourcing my second CDI box....

....and looking forward to the day my engine bay looks like this ....

    ....and finally....

....Gus is nearly there with my RSR racing pump....

....and my engine has been stripped, checked as being good in the key areas and the cases have now been machined and shuffle pinned (photos pending).....the build will start soon ....

.....paintwork will start in a few weeks and I'm hoping to really kick on with the project this year all being well

    Cheers,

wow, looks like we both have made up the lack of progress with retail therapy; You've had a good hunt!
Those throttle bodies (slide valves I assume?) look awesome as do the RSR brakes. Are they from Zuffenhaus?

....thanks Patrick......the slides came from Mittelmotor in Germany, nicely built and good value........the brakes do look similar to Zuffenhaus, which I guess they should both being reproductions, although these came from Migel Pastorino (again Germany), there are many Porsche specialists that sell his parts but all the good stuff can be bought directly here...... https://powerparts.shop

    Gearbox woes!.....

Having found a 10K tacho I thought it time to pull out my other gauges and get these together......first time I'd noticed the trip button sticking out the front of the speedo!.....

......and worse to come when I flipped the gauge over......electronic!!! ....

...I'm an early car guy and know little of the multitude of changes that happened between 74-77 so easily missed by a numpty! My excuse anyway!

I had planned to convert the gauge anyway to a correct looking 74 180MPH speedo but doing so to this one would have meant deleting the trip button and losing that functionality. A pants idea so a mechanical gauge it had to be......I contacted Gary Cook who will be building the car to check on conversion suitability on a couple of speedos I'd found......'don't worry about that' was his reply 'I have an original 74 speedo I'd be saving with you in mind'.....such a cool friend and great help ....

....gauges sorted but one problem remained......my original 77 magnesium gearbox had an electronic speedo pick up and the end case I'd dropped to Ben Coles last year for oil pump machining was missing a mechanical speedo drive! ....

....the plan with this car was always to have it looking and spec'd as close as possible to a 74 3.0RS, albeit with an RSR spec engine.....naturally there will be compromises and one of those is the engine cases which differ in appearance, however the 930/02 engine is a direct development of the earlier 74 engines and with its six bolt crank the perfect core for an RSR build. I also liked the fact the car would remain original matching numbers.......the 915/61 gearbox on the other hand looked exactly like any other magnesium cased box of this era and I gave it little thought when I delivered it to Mike Bainbridge for rebuild expecting no more than fitting a ZF LSD and changing a few gear ratios, plus the usual mods/strengthening of course....

....however more research and it transpired that not only would it need work for a mechanical speedo drive but it also has a 8:31 crown wheel pinion rather than the 7:31 used on the earlier cars.....now those who know will tell you that would mean a fundamental difference in characteristics......whilst the 8:31 is a stronger upgrade the 7:31's provide more zip, keep the engine spinning and are livlier in feel....obviously wanting the car to drive as close to an RS as possible I figured this original matching numbers box needed too much work and went back to Mike and suggested using a spare untouched gearbox I'm fortunate to have from a mid 73 car.....

....however Mike had other ideas and suggested that with 320HP going through it, my later box with its strengthened input shaft was a much better bet, especially as the car will certainly be used in anger, and therefore better to change to a mechanical speedo end case and fit an 8:35 crown wheel pinion which has no discernible difference to the earlier 7:31 but is again a stronger more desirable upgrade......another advantage is that I should hopefully only have to change a couple of gears to match RS spec....

...playing around with the gearbox ratio calculator highlighted that the 8:35 will be bang on....

....decision made and CWP ordered from Tandler Racing, it's a piece of engineering art....

.....with ZF diff already sourced through Mike .......

....specification of the gearbox is now:

    Number 7174852 - 915/61
    8:35 crown wheel pinion
    RS Gear Ratios:
    1st - 3.18 (11/35)
    2nd - 1.83 (18/33)
    3rd - 1.26 (23/29)
    4th - 0.93 (27/25)
    5th - 0.72 (29/21)
Plate Type ZF Limited Slip Differential
RSR Oil Pump with Trombone Cooler

A slight deviation from stock but a worthwhile upgrade and still pure RS in spirit plus the car remains matching numbers!

    Happy Days
