    RSR Cams....

...when it came to cams I've had a massive dose of good fortune, I'd just ordered a set of RSR spec centre feed cams with 49mm journals when, after seeing my post regarding rockers, a friend contacted me to ask if an original set of 911 105 103/4 00 RSR cams would be of any use!....inclusive of cam drive hub, injection pump drive, hole/mounting for the mechanical rev counter and fine thread nuts they're exactly what I need........rare parts indeed, it feels a bit like a significant lottery win!

It will mean a slight change of plans as I intended to use my original cam towers and the RSR spec cams with 49mm journals to suit......earlier cams had 47mm journals and I've since learnt that whilst regular cams had 3 journals, all the racing engines had 4.....not such a problem as this changed back to 4 journals on later engines and I just need to locate a set of 74/75 cam towers which can be modified for the oilways.....I think that's correct, I'm learning and every day's a school day!

    The magic numbers .....

The cams were delivered today and huge thanks to Mike Bainbridge of MB Porsche Engineering who let me have these from his own personal collection of rare parts. Mike's had these in storage for the past 30-odd years, they came from a sound engine and are in good shape after their slumber although they'll get sent away for dressing, polishing, refurb etc and to check that lift and duration are all to RSR spec.

I'm told the cams are pretty wild and are hard work to live with.......I so hope that's right!

    Cheers,

    Awesome Darren!
These don't come up for sale that often, and if they do, they're often the (wrong) ones with the 3 bearrings - pretty special these!

Yes, I've been reading up on these and I have been told they're too narrow and wild for street use.
Interested to see how you go with these, because currently I'm planning to compromise and go for a milder setup for my '73 RSR rep.

Turbos and SC’s started the 49mm journals. 76-77 911’s used 47mm/4 journal. Drilling out 4th isn’t hard. Ive recently run my RSR spec engine with billet cams made here in the north west 900 miles on the street, no issues. New small journal cam housings will carry 964 casting numbers.

    Thanks guys,

Gordon, no doubt you've been there, done that many, many times before me! .....thank you for the input.

My base is the car's original 77 Carrera 3 engine which is ideal having a 6-bolt crank etc. although with 901 105 111 1R cam towers which I'm pretty sure have 49mm journals. No problem and as you mentioned easy enough to swap out and modify.

I've spoken to Nick who's building the engine about using RSR cams and he has no fears of the engine being perfectly useable with the right set up......that said I've seen how he drives!!

    Cheers,

    Mexico Blue

Very nice! I'm a big fan of Mexico Blue. My original 1974 factory 3.0 RSR was Mexico Blue. Thanks for the oil cooler!

You're welcome George, it's a big honour to have a small role in your build.

    1977 Sebring 12-Hour Champion

Some may have recognised RSR #9048 as the car in which George won the 12-Hours of Sebring back in 1977 ....

....George is quite a character and a pretty cool guy ....

....as I mentioned it's a huge honour to have a small link to this fabulous car

    Cheers,

George is in the process of building his own #9048 to exacting detail and back to it's 1977 livery.....

....from what I've seen it's an incredible build and the detail is amazing ...

...so cool and mind blowing to think one of the coolers I've had fabricated will be gracing this awesome car

These 911 journeys conjure up some surreal experiences and you get to meet incredible people....getting to deal with a true period race winning Porsche legend is pretty awesome!

    Cheers George
