what is history of the ducktail ?

What is the history of the ducktail ? I have a '66 911 which a US serviceman stationed in Germany bought in 1973 or 74. He says it had the ducktail when he bought it, so I guess Porsche was offering these over the counter. Were all of these supplied by Porsche in house or was there an aftermarket German supplier ?

    Thanks for any help,
    Chris Steineger
