    Front trunk VIN color

I've been researching the correct areas on my 1971 to understand what body and suspension parts where what color. Typically black vs the cars main body color, in my case Gemini blue. I had thought that the inside trunk VIN number was painted black. But looking at the 1970 700 Mile car I see its silver. Perhaps it changed from 1970 to 1971? input welcome...Thanks

yes, the vin area is black for a 1971. my car is built 10/70.
mine is, and so have been every 1971 car I have checked.
paint it with non gloss black, with a brush...and don't tape it off...that doesnt look good.
also the tab to lock down the smugglers box is half black.

Simon jib , your vin # should not be black IMO . All cars I've seen with stars at the numbers are body color , vins with asterisks are black . I'm sure there are some exceptions , but a good guideline .

My 1971 Targa built 12/70 is black but it has stars instead of asterisks

The first image in silver is not the poster's car.
It is the 700 mile car.
My car is with stars, and non-karmann.
My car was never repainted, and was black-out.

The original question concerns a 1971 car, but what about the earlier ones? Was black always the practice? Was there a difference between Porsche and Karmann bodies?
