Thread: Restoration of 1972 2.4 S Targa c/n 9112310827

  1. #21
Here are interior issues with the car. It is going to receive all-new seat coverings, carpet, and restoration of the door cards. Clearly it needs:

    (1) Correct pedals - what is a good source for a stock set?
    (2) Correct shifter - I see these original 915 shifters on eBay.
    (3) New door cards without these 1990’s speaker cutouts with correct speakers - please post or send photos of yours; these are difficult to find detail shots of on-line.
    (4) A new steering wheel per above.

I would appreciate and additional feedback on the interior. Highlights? Pitfalls? Thank you again in advance.

PS - The photos are posting upside down! The iPhone does not playing well with some forums. I will re-take them and try to post them right-side up.

Thank you for the picture of the Frankfurt - I will look for one that matches that one if it's a Frankfurt car.
When you figure out what you need I can help you with it.

Bear in mind that the 915 shifter for '72 was different than all the later 915 shifters. The '72 shifter and boot looks much the same as the earlier 901 shifter. Here's mine.

    Hi David,
nice thread and he will probably be very instructive for me because I recently bought a Targa model year 1972. Since it is my first Porsche, I do not know the original condition. Therefore, unfortunately I will not be able to help you, but I will follow your thread very interested.
    Best regards from southern Germany

    No H1's for 72.

I fully restored a 73 S Targa some years back so if your stuck yell out but the folks here will sort you for any issues in no time at all.

The best source I know for specific year codes on Blaupunkt radios for the 1970s is Bosch Hella SWF SHO Blaupunkt date codes at The Samba.

On Blaupunkt, the poster, EverettB gave:

    ======================================

    Blaupunkt
From 1955(?) onward, Blaupunkt radios have a simple letter code to indicate the year the radio was produced. Note that a radio produced in 1961 could be seen in either 1961 or 1962 model vehicles.
    1955 - 1956 - R
    1956 - 1957 - K
    1957 - 1958 - S
    1958 - 1959 - G
    1959 - 1960 - Q
    1960 - 1961 - D
    1961 - 1962 - E
    1962 - 1963 - T
    1963 - 1964 - U
    1964 - 1965 - V
    1965 - 1966 - W
    1966 - 1967 - X
    1967 - 1968 - Y
    1968 - Z
    1968 - 1969 - A or B
    1969 - 1970 - B, then 7 630
    1970 - 7 630
    1971 - 7 631
    1973 - 7 633
    1974 - 7 634
    1975 - 7 635
... and so on, last digit increases by 1 each year.

The letter codes were the first character of the radio's serial number on a paper tag on the right side of the radio. I suppose the numeric codes likely worked the same way.

Thank you for the replies and enthusiasm for this thread. Thanks to Mike, Arne, and Jim for the directive and informative posts. I know my shifter cover looks later and I’ll have to find the correct one for the 1972. If my PPS confirms that a Frankfurt was equipped I will need help to find a 632 code radio.

Were the H4's the correct lens for 72 in Europe? I thought the early 72's used H1's and switched to H'4's in March timeframe? All US cars had sugar scoops?
    thanks for the clarification

Porsche makes new door cards. I have them in my car: they look great but they are expensive, and you lose a little bit of that “vintage” feeling. You could also go looking for a used set.

I have the correct steering wheel and butterfly horn button that is dated 1972, the butterfly horn button is in great condition but the steering wheel needs recovering and it's 400mm
