Gordon Murray 50th anniversary exhibition Dunsfold Surrey

A handful of us were invited to a private exhibition at Dunsfold celebrating Gordon Murray's 50th anniversary on Motorsport and automotive industry. A very special and extraordinary number of cars assembled - many from private collections like Bernie's - or OEM manufacturers museums were shown at his business premises. It was a while ago but just came across the photos on an old phone data card I'd discarded ...almost threw it out. One snap for example:

We were fortunate that Gordon gave us a personal tour for several hours and joined us for lunch. Also showed us his tee shirt collection!

There are probably McLaren and Brabham fans here who might appreciate this snap. Maybe I'll post some others when I get a chance and get photos organised.

A few more from the day ......

We discussed how a previous owner of my 911 and his business partner had forced a reluctant Ron Dennis and Gordon to race the F1 road car. The F1 was only intended to be a roadcar. The persuasive duo were well known British racer and British motorsport engineer (the RS P.O.) based in Surrey who had decided they would race ian F1 with or without McLaren factory support. Gordon told me that day to control quality of any racing of the F1 car since it would have McLaren and his name he'd reluctantly got involved in the racing development of the F1 road car. Ironically the car prepared by British outfit Lazante that the factory reluctantly had backed as a consequence lucked into the win having initially trailed the pushy duo's car; got ahead when the latter had problems iirc the story. The win is part of McLaren history. There was article in Octane about parts of the F1 racing story. I'm no expert on all this so don't know all the details but sharing fun tidbits I've picked up.

It'll be interesting to see Gordon Murrays current follow-up to F1. He was speaking at the Revival saying he thinks time is right after so many years for him to go forward with some thing new on his trusty drawing board!

    FANTASTIC Steve !!!!!

Murray was/is the cutting edge rock star for me and my buds....

Once we saw the slab-sided BT-44 it clinched it... We thought, this was it !!!!

    Thanks for the thread …

    Cheers,
    Chuck

    ...hi Chuck

Can't say I know him other than a few meetings like this on occasion but he seems to exude a certain rock 'n roll style ...just some of his tee shirts and bikes on display that day....

Very different in style to the wonderful characters who founded a different famous F1 team whom I worked with -- at times very closely -- over the years.

Sorry some lanky guy is in the way of the cars

Awesome thread, Steve... you certainly get some great access! I met Gordon once at an RSA dinner in London - he was in full highland get up! No photos allowed though...

Am at Goodwood, and there are the Lauda and Prototype on display. Saw them today. I will take some pics tomorrow.
