Thread: What’s the pinnacle of early 911’s?

What’s the pinnacle of early 911’s?

What’s your favorite if you could choose one longhood? (Maybe not the specific serial number but the model.)

    901?
    67S rally?
    911R?
    911 GTS?
    911 TR?
    911 ST ?
    73 RS or RSR?

I think I like the 67S rally kit as they started supporting racing and it’s a SWB. I also prefer a street legal car.

73RS gets my vote. You should know. Looks like you've got one in your garage. Good for you.

Difficult to decide between an R and a TR... (based on the fact I've never seen an R but I followed a TR for many kms on its way to Classic LeMans several years ago .. oh what a sound it made!

Some photos of the car 2BRX... quite the history!

I like to see the racers, and special make-up cars.
but, they are for other purposes... for me, I like a touring car, with thick colorful carpet and rear wipers.
and a quieter and smoother ride.
    so I would just chose a 1970 2.2 T or an E coupe.
and second favorite would be a 1964 or 65 with wood dash and wheel, etc.

    Current long term ownership: 63 Cab, 71 911, 74 914

Best-sounding early 911 I've ever driven was Childs' T/R, though the 911R for Issue 000 wasn't short of a symphony.

But...the pinnacle? You've named the obvious candidates, and the ones I'd have to work through are:

    1967 911S
    1967/1968 911R
    1970/1971 911S
    1973 RS
    1973 RSR
1974 2.1 turbo (does that count, as it IS a longhood?)

All of the above are fantastic for different reasons, but there's always a case to be made for a nice-driving 911T or 911E…

    Thumbs up

I completely agree with Pete... I drove this car for 4 days back '03 when mine was being rebuilt...

Hard to discribe... but as it went up in RPM there was 4 or 5 distintive exhaust and intake octives that it (and you) went through... ...... it took your breath away... Thank you SO much Stephen ...

I've driven completly stock RS's, and they are amazing in there weight and balance...

If I had to make a choice I'd really like to try a 2.5 S/T.......

Pic of me, Stephen Childs, and Chris Tallon with the T/R after a drive through G16 (Carmel Valley Road) ...
I did that back and forth drive one more time that day...

    Cheers,
    cm

Ya street use is a must. So a 67 911S. Mine has a 100l tank and sport seats so it would be relatively easy to add the rest of the rally parts.

All of these are street usable (except the RSR perhaps).
I had a big tank 67S though I sold it when I had two. The rally kit was quite rare and a big step for Porsche supporting racing. The 67s is my favorite 911 if not just for the green gauges.

I agree that any (and all of them) are great BUT if I could choose only one early car I would go for the 1969 GTS. I think that they have all of the attributes (and probably sounds) of the T/R and R but are special build and only 3 were made (As far as I can determine)
They not only streetable (if you dare with such a bespoke car) but also were a genuine LWB evolution of the T/R and R concepts before the "mass production" ST

I'm with Hugh on the factory specials: the GTS tried to do an awful lot at a critical time in the company's history.

Street car though: I think the 2.2S is ideal. Still high strung and compressed; but a little less peaky than the MFI 2.0S.
I know it's probably heresy to many, but the 67S has never done much for me.

The 2.7RS begin to feel too modern to me but that also makes them much more drivable.

    To each his own
