Thread: What’s the pinnacle of early 911’s?

Steve- excellent post on the RS. Really interesting (and I hadn’t thought about the turbo comparison)

    I have a 67s (2.0), 70s (2.2), and a 73rs (2.7) for comparison.

First, my 67S is a great example and drives wonderfully so it may not be a universal for comparison.
What makes it my favorite is that it feels lighter, especially on its feet. I prefer the delicate handling from the narrow tires. As everyone knows is has no torque down low so you need to drive it with precision and stay in the upper rpm range.
My 2.2 is a targa so that feel different. MFI makes throttle response more immediate. It’s more torque without loosing the high revving nature of the 2 liter. And green gauges!

The 2.7 is just in a different league. It has power everywhere once it starts going. Immediate throttle response. So much grip from the tired. More precise steering than the 67S. Even today I think a well driven RS on tight twisty roads would be very difficult to stay up with.

It's much simpler than all this. It's which ever model you own and drive regularly.

The one I drive the most is my Italian 73S. I had an RS back in the day when they were cheap. They are nice but not a half a mill nicer than a well sorted 2.4S. Just like my GT speedster. It was nice but not that much nicer than a well done pushrod speedster. It was about the idea of having the top of the heap as much anything. They were great cars but I don't miss them. One reason I like the 67S is the 356 DNA. Yes green gauges as .well as other things. But it's true, whatever your driving may be the best.

    True!

My order of purchase was 67S, 73RS and then 70S and the reverse would be my order of selling too. Economists call that a revealed preference!

And my favorite to drive is the 67S.

You and I are so in synch here. (And I have a GT Speedster too.). As you point out, the are very similar so the marginal money not justifiable (though they each are lighter than the “ordinary” variant).

Would the pinnacle allow any known hotrod to be on the list..?

Ex., a fan of the Doors in UK built a car, but has little information on drivetrain.
